Practically perfect singing nanny Mary Poppins is one of the best loved characters of all time, so it's safe to say that expectations were running high for Disney's planned sequel, which stars British actress Emily Blunt in the title role.
However, the star can feel safe in the knowledge that she has the approval of Julie Andrews, original Mary Poppins, screen legend and, as we like to refer to her, the Queen of Genovia.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the release of the much-anticipated adaptation of The Girl On The Train, in which she stars as the troubled lead character Rachel, Emily revealed that the musical icon has given her her blessing. Phew.
'Rob [Marshall, the film's director] said he was in the Hamptons, and he saw [Andrews],' she revealed. 'He said, "It’s top secret, but Emily Blunt’s playing Mary Poppins." And she went, "Oh, wonderful!"'
Naturally, Julie's approval helped Emily to feel a little less nervous about tackling such a well-loved role.
'I felt like I wanted to cry,' she said. 'It was lovely to get her stamp of approval. That took the edge off it, for sure.'

The actress also went on to reveal that this incarnation of Mary Poppins stays a little truer to the original novels by P. L. Travers, meaning that the character will be 'a little meaner.'
With EmilY also joined on screen by her Devil Wears Prada co-star Meryl Streep, Disney have got us feeling very excited indeed. 21st December 2018 can't come soon enough...
