Elliot Page and his wife Emma Porter are to split following three years of marriage. Legal records show that the actor, 33, filed for a contested divorce from the dancer, 26, at Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday. 'After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,' the Canadian couple said in a statement. 'We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.'
The pair's split comes after Emma showed support for Elliot in December, after the Juno actor came out as transgender. 'I am so proud of @elliotpage.Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world,' she wrote. 'I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot's existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.'
Making the announcement he was transgender, and prefers 'he'/'they' pronouns, Elliot said: ‘I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.’
He also used the post to address discrimination towards trans people. 'The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I'm scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the "jokes" and of violence,' he said. 'To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture. The statistics are staggering.'
Emma and Elliot - who met on Instagram - announced they were getting married in January 2018.
