Ellen Page Brings Girlfriend To Red Carpet For First Time Ever

In case you didn’t know about next year’s Oscar nominee shoe-ins, Ellen Page and Julianne Moore are going to play lovers in Freeheld, a film about same-sex couples’ equal rights. And as you can see from the trailer way below all of this writing, it looks to be fantastic, uplifting-sad tearjerker.

And at the premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Ellen Page did something she’s never done before. The actress, who we last saw taking on one of the Republican candidates about his stance on gay marriage (he doesn’t like it one jot) – brought her girlfriend, Samantha Thomas, to the premiere.

While Ellen has been spotted with alleged girlfriends both before and after coming out on Valentine’s Day 2014, she’s never done the whole hand-in-hand smug-couple-on-the-red-carpet thing. And that whole hand-in-hand smug-couple-on-the-red-carpet thing is just totally valuable.

We see straight couples expressing their mutual love and adoration on the red carpet practically daily. And, of late, we’ve only really had Ruby Rose and her girlfriend Phoebe Dahl or Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi for a bit of lesbian relief in a PR-driven industry that has infamously forced A-listers to closet themselves in a bid for public approval. It’s refreshing to see queer people, out and proud, doing things that straight couples get to do all the time.

Asked by E! why she brought her girlfriend to the premiere (imagine an interviewer asking anyone in a straight couple why they brought their other half as a plus one to a premiere?) Ellen simply responded, ‘I’m in love.Walking down the carpet holding my girlfriend's hand is pretty special. It’s pretty awesome.’

We agree – and the matching monochrome suits have doubly won us over… oh, and if the above didn't make you emotional at all, check this out:
