Fresh from the success of Oscar favourite La La Land, director Damien Chazelle has revealed details of his latest project, a Netflix series titled The Eddy that will mark his first venture into TV. And yes, it’s a musical.

The eight-episode drama will take place in a multi-cultural contemporary Paris and will centre around ‘a club, its owner, the house band and the chaotic city that surrounds them.’ Shot on location in France, it’ll feature dialogue in French, English and Arabic, so prepare yourself for subtitles. Chazelle, who won his first Best Director Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards, will direct two out of the eight episodes, as well as taking on executive producer duties.

Based on the behind-the-scenes line-up for The Eddy, Netflix appear to be continuing their glittering run of attracting major talent to their original drama projects. Five-time BAFTA winner screenwriter Jack Thorne, who co-wrote theatre sensation Harry Potter and the Cursed Child along with John Tiffany and J K Rowling, is on writing duties, while Alan Poul, best known for his work on critically acclaimed shows like Six Feet Under and The Newsroom, will produce. Original music will be written by six-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard, who has credits on Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill and Michael Jackson’s Bad. Not a bad team, all in all.

‘I’ve always dreamed of shooting in Paris, so I’m doubly excited to be teaming up with Jack, Glen and Alan on this story, and thrilled that we have found a home for it at Netflix,’ Chazelle revealed in a statement.

Netflix’s Vice President of International Originals, Erik Barmack, added ‘From the intense, complex relationship between a jazz drummer and his instructor in Whiplash to his dazzling duo of lovelorn Los Angelenos in La La Land, Damien’s work is emotional and electrifying. His projects have a rhythm all their own, and we’re incredibly excited for him, Jack Glen, Alan and the production team to bring their vision for The Eddy to Netflix.’

A release date and casting information for The Eddy are yet to be announced, but given the excitement already surrounding the project (and Netflix’s magnetic appeal for major film talents) we can surely expect the involvement of yet more big names.

The Eddy aside, Chazelle is currently working on First Man, an adaptation of a Neil Armstrong biography that will reunite the director with his La La Land lead Ryan Gosling, who’ll be playing the titular astronaut.
