When we bid farewell to the period drama last Christmas after a six-season stint, we couldn’t help but wonder how we would ever enjoy our Sunday nights again (it was the only cure for Monday blues).

But our hopes were lifted when rumours shrouding a Downton Abbey film adaptation surfaced in August after Michelle Dockery, AKA Lady Mary, hinted at a reunion on the big screen in an interview with The Telegraph.

The actress teased the prospect of a movie after she admitted, 'I think there is potential for a film. That is something I would wholeheartedly consider, so we will see. It may not be over yet.'

And today we can unveil the news we’ve all been waiting for, after the film has reportedly been confirmed by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.

He spoke exclusively to the Daily Mail on the prospect of a movie, 'I think it will be fun to get everyone together and move it to a larger scale because you have got more money to spend.'

And if that isn’t enough to confirm a film adaptation of the aristocratic drama, Maggie Smith is set to reprise her role as Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley.

The news was confirmed by fellow cast member Michael Fox, who played Andy Parker, on the red carpet at the BAFTA Party last Saturday.

He revealed that a film adaptation would not be the same without Maggie as, 'she elevates it to something else, because she is such a legend and a national treasure.'

He continued: 'The film without her would still be good with all the other actors but it puts a stamp of quality with her in it.'

Filming for the highly-anticipated movie is reported to commence in 2017 but we’ll have to hold out for any plot twists.

We’ll keep you posted.
