Donald Trump Just Broke A Cardinal Rule Of Fashion. Sad!

Donald Trump

Whatever you sit on the political spectrum, and whatever your thoughts on the current President of the United States and Commander-in-Chief, we can probably all agree on one thing: Donald Trump is not a very stylish man. From the almost deliberately poor fit of his suits to his cartoonishly oversized red ties to the infamous 'Make America Great Again' baseball caps, the President’s disregard for all matters sartorial is a key part of his everyman, ‘just an ordinary guy, telling it how it is’ shtick – and certainly chimes oddly with his focus upon the self-presentation of the women in his family and in high level White House roles. Now, the POTUS has committed a fashion crime that makes all those previous offences seem minor.

For a meeting with Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina yesterday, as documented by official White House photographer Shealah Craighead, the President wore a navy jacket. So far, so Trump, you might think. Take in the full picture, though, and you’ll immediately note that rather than choosing trousers in a matching shade, the President wore black instead. And just as socks and sandals are (with some very high fashion exceptions) strictly verboten, it’s a generally received fashion truth that navy blue and black just don’t work together. Yes, there’s probably plenty of convincing street style evidence to argue the opposite, but in this case, the old adage certainly rings true.

On a happier fashion note, don’t forget to fully appreciate the Senator’s extremely jazzy socks, in a vibrant shade of pink with bold blue polka dots, which make an appearance in the bottom left hand corner of the photo.

We’re fully aware that in the grand scheme of things (ie. the grand scheme of potentially damaging and / or disastrous things that the President has set out to do in his first term in office) this sartorial offence is a pretty minor one. But in the mean time, the Daily Show has a rather convincing theory as to how this fashion mix-up came about (and yes, it involves that ‘staring-at-the-sun’ meme…)
