The Virgin Media Must See Moment at tonight's BAFTA TV Awards was the only award voted for the public. And it provided the most powerful moment of the night, when Diversity picked up the award for their incredible dance routine on Britain's Got Talent which was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
The dance troupe's Ashley and Jordan Banjo accepted the award, and in their speech, addressed how difficult it was to be target of 30,000 Ofcom complaints. They also spoke about how the abuse and complaints only proved how important the routine was, and why it was so needed on primetime TV.
First, Ashley thanked those who showed their support following the performance. 'Thank you to everyone that stood by us, every phone call, every comment, every DM - you guys made the difference to what was a really dark time, being in the storm of 30,000 complaints, just a torrent of like racially charged abuse threats, all of it,' Ashley said. 'It was a dark time but that support made a difference.'
But then Ashley continued, calling out those who did send vile abuse. 'And in a way, I have to say thank you to the people that complained, to the people that did pour that abuse out there online, because you showed the truth.'
'You showed exactly why this performance in this moment was necessary. But for all of those people, just take a look because this - as much as there is so many conversations and so much that needs to change - this is what change looks like,' he added.
Ashley continued, 'And I'm so proud to be standing here, so thankful to all of those people. And for me, this is about not representing the minority - it felt like we weren't at the time - but standing here right now, this represents the majority. So thank you all so so much. Let's keep having difficult conversations, let's keep standing up for what's right, regardless of the colour of our skin and we will achieve that equality.'
Following the racist abuse and complaints about the routine last year, ITV defended the performance and Ofcom said they would not investigate. Earlier this year, Ashley also revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reached out to him offering their support following the horrendous backlash.
