Disney’s The Little Mermaid To Get The Sofia Coppola Treatment

It's probs not going to be the ethereal, indie affair you're used to though

If we were the type to use the term ‘girl crush’, we would use it for Sofia Coppola. The film director is the very epitome of cool – she's modelled for Marc Jacobs, dated Spike Jonze, is besties with Chloe Sevigny and is married to the singer from Phoenix. She also has a sparkling wine named after her, which comes in a can and has a straw attached. That might be the coolest part.

Oh, and then there’s her movies: The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation,* Marie Antoinette* and most rencently The Bling Ring. All such amazingly sick flicks.

Now Coppola’s in talks to direct a live-action version of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, according to the Hollywood Reporter. But please manage your expectations of an ethereal, Vaseline-smeared lens affair starring some indie ingenue, as the report says the project ‘differs dramatically' from her previous work, which it notes has been ‘aimed at a highbrow adult audience’.

Instead, Coppola’s first stab at a mainstream movie will be ‘kid-friendly and appeal to a four-quadrant audience’.

We will absolutely still go and see it, obviously.
