It's official, Donald Trump is the President of the United States again, which means his wife Melania Trump is First Lady again too. By now the lore surrounding their marriage is well established – at least on social media.
Melania was noticeably absent from the majority of Trump's election campaign last year, and she released her memoir Melania, where she took an oppositional stance against some of his policies, including women's reproductive rights, a month before the election. She also did not feature in Trump's 'First Family' photograph when he won the election in November.
Now, a clip from Trump's inauguration is going viral where Melania seems to offer her husband little more than an 'air kiss' - with the brim of her hat blocking the exchange somewhat - as he celebrated his return to office. Dressed in a black suit with a matching boater hat, her inauguration look has already been described by some as 'sombre'.
The clip has certainly given social media users something to talk about. 'I can't this is too funny,' reads one post in block capitals. 'That damn big ass hat,' wrote another.
'She's keeping that distance,' a third user chimed in. While someone else summarised the moment: 'Donald Trump enters the Capitol Rotunda for his swearing-in ceremony and gives Melania Trump the most awkward air kiss I've ever seen.'
Others, however, have been slightly more generous in their interpretation of the PDA mishap. 'I'm pretty sure Trump miscalculated the depth of Melania's hat when he leaned in for that kiss. During this "Last Minute Air Kiss," I can see him move his head a bit to the left and then to the right, thinking, "Ahhh, what do I do?",' reads one X post. 'Donald Trump gives Melania an air-kiss as not to mess up her gorgeous look,' added another. 'That’s respect.'
Regardless of what led to the not-so-romantic moment between America's newly reappointed First Couple, the air kiss has made for one of the most shareable moments of the inauguration. Never mind Trump's promise to give the American people 'the best first date, the biggest first week and the most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency in American history', it's the 'awkward air kiss' he shared with his wife that has captured the nation's spirit.
In the space of a few minutes, the video has already been shared thousands of times online and will no doubt be a meme for months, or rather the next four years, to come.
