This Devil Wears Prada Deleted Scene Shows A Different Side To Miranda Priestly

Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada

So you think you know The Devil Wears Prada? In the 10 or so years since the film’s release, it has, for better or worse, become one of the most quoted, most parodied and most discussed pop culture representations of the fashion industry. It might be the reason you can correctly spell ‘Gabbana.’ It might explain why you’ve self-deprecatingly described your decision to wear florals in spring as ‘ground-breaking.’ And it’s almost certainly responsible for our over-reliance upon ‘cerulean’ as an impressive-sounding synonym for blue (and our undying love for Emily Blunt…)

At the heart of the film is Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly, the icy editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine who we’re invited to view as a thinly veiled portrait of Vogue’s Anna Wintour. It’s Miranda’s fraught relationship with main character Andy (she of clam chowder and having truly terrible friends fame, as played by Anne Hathaway) that’s the crux of the film: while Andy might thaw her boss’s frosty demeanour ever so slightly over the 109 minute run-time, we’re never really given much of an insight into Miranda’s character, to the chagrin of some viewers. Could anyone really be that mean for no reason?

A newly resurfaced scene from the 2006 film, however, promises to provide a measure of back story for Miranda, and has so far earned both praise and criticism from the film’s legions of fans.

Spencer Althouse, a community manager at Buzzfeed, tweeted the short clip along with the message ‘I’m just seeing this deleted scene from The Devil Wears Prada for the first time, and honestly it changed the whole movie for me.’

In the final cut of the film, Andy is called up to attend a black tie event with first assistant Emily (Emily Blunt) and Miranda, eventually averting a potentially difficult scenario by correctly recalling the names and details of some important approaching guests. In the additional clip, we see Miranda’s husband arrive at the party, making awkward comments and insulting the CEO before Andy swoops in with a charm offensive, diffusing the situation. We then cut to Miranda, who looks back over her shoulder mouths ‘Thank you’ at her assistant.

An important humanising moment, or entirely inconsistent with Miranda’s character? Naturally, the response from fans on Twitter has been polarised. Some ask ‘Why wasn’t this in the movie?’ while others point out that it simply doesn’t fit.

‘No wonder they deleted it. Undermined Miranda’s whole ice queen narrative,’ wrote @bluedgal, with @drs06 adding ‘I don’t like it. Miranda needed no one.’

Whatever you think of the additional footage, it’s certainly fun to see one of our most-watched movies in a (slightly) different light. Time to dredge up footage of Andy taking out her awful friend ‘Lily’ with the Bang and Olufsen phone?
