Derry Girls fans were well spoken for at the TV BAFTA Awards this year, with their very own Sister Michael bagging the top comedy prize.

Sharing a category with Daisy May Cooper (Am I Being Unreasonable), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth), Lucy Beaumont (Meet the Richardsons), Natasia Demetriou (Ellie & Natasia), Taj Atwal (Hullraisers), it was anyone's game, but Siobhan McSweeney who plays Sister Michael in Derry Girls scooped up the top prize.

She won 'Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme', and Siobhan seemed genuinely shocked when her name was called out. She swooshed around the Royal Festival Hall in her shiny red gown as if she was lost in a train station and entertained the room when she finally took to the stage.

In her speech, the Irish actress said: 'To the people of Derry, thank you for taking me into your hearts and your living rooms. I am impressed with how you encompass the spirit of compromise and resilience despite the indignities, ignorance and stupidity of your so-called leaders (in) Dublin, Stormont and Westminster. In the words of my beloved Sister Michael, "it's time they started to wise up".'

The actor, 43, also mentioned that her mother suggested she should consider becoming a teacher while on her death bed (a joke Siobhan opened with) and laughed at the fact she's now won a BAFTA for playing a teacher. 'Joke's on you!' she said, before dedicating her award to her mother.

Siobhan, who is from County Cork, moved to London in 2001 to pursue acting when she secured a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She is currently in a relationship with talent agent Kevin Joseph Brady, and though she keeps details about her private life out of the public eye, we expect the pair will be celebrating in style after Siobhan's win.

She starred in Derry Girls for all three series and has become a firm fan favourite over the years. The star also shouted out Lisa McGee, the show's creator, as well as her fellow cast members in her speech – saying it wouldn't be the same without them.
