Demi Lovato’s battle with drugs and alcohol has been well documented, but now she’s in her third year of sobriety and has just set up a record label with former love Joe Jonas. To commemorate the occasion, the 22-year-old wrote a heartfelt note to her manager, Phil McIntrye.
Writing the open letter on Instagram, coupled with a picture of the pair, Demi had just finished thanking a whole bunch of people who’d been involved in the creation of the Safehouse Records label – but saved her most emotional note until last.
‘Last but not least... Phil McIntyre. This man not only believed in me when I was 15 and made my entire career happen, but he fought so fucking hard to get me sober,’ she says. ‘When so many others had given up on me, he never did. He told me he cared too much about me to watch me self-destruct. Therefore, at the very end of my drinking and using he gave me one last chance: get sober and he’d stay, or he’d have to leave.’
She continued: ‘He did that out of love. Not out of a money hungry I-don’t-give-a-fuck-about-the-artist kind of way. But he cared so much that instead of being the kind of person in this industry who could care less about my well being and continued to make money while I was spiraling, he stood his ground and said, “If you do this I will fight this battle with you every step of the way.”’

Having spoken in the past about her issues – Demi once said she couldn’t go 30 minutes without cocaine – it’s amazing to see that she’s healthy, well and smashing life. And not just that, but she’s thanking the people who got her through what was an incredibly difficult time.
Here’s hoping this inspires others who are struggling to stick with recovery and see it through to the end.
