Love Island has been complained about to TV regulator Ofcom over 1,500 times after Danny Bibby entered the villa. Danny, a 25-year-old plumber, had used a racial slur on Instagram in 2019 - which led to widespread calls for ITV to remove him from the villa.

Ofcom confirmed it had received a total of 1,507 complaints in relation to the casting of a contestant, with 1,081 complaints about the July 15 episode, and 426 complaints on July 18. (During the July 18 episode Kanye West and Jay Z's N***** In Paris played during a video montage.)

Last night, Danny was evicted from the show, as the islanders had to chose who left, from the three least popular men in the public vote.

There have also been comparisons with the way Danny - a white contestant - was allowed to stay, as in 2019 Sherif Lanre - a Black contestant - was removed from the villa after an alleged play-fight and use of the word c***. Sherif told The Sun on Sunday{ =nofollow}: 'ITV have shown complete double standards when it comes to racism. They don't seem to care. A white guy has been allowed to apologise from inside the villa for using the N word and carry on filming, whereas I was removed for play fighting and doing something by accident. The N word shouldn't be used and this contestant should be removed from the house like I was, especially after the England football team were racially abused this week. ITV need to set an example.' (ITV told the paper: 'Welfare and duty of care towards our contributors is always our primary concern, and we have extensive measures in place to support the islanders before, during and after their participation on the show. Sherif was offered full support having left the Villa.')

Danny apologised last week, saying: 'I'd like to take the time to apologise to anyone that may have taken offence to my inappropriate remark. I never meant anything malicious by this comment at all. I am not a racist person and it's unacceptable language and ignorant. I meant no offence and feel like I have really learnt from my mistakes and will never use that word again. I am a kind loving person and hopefully you get to see that in the show.'
