One of the biggest stories of last month was the news that Colin Firth was splitting from his wife Livia Giuggioli, a year after she admitted an affair with her alleged stalker. At the time, an official statement said that the pair remained ‘close friends’ - and that definitely seems to be the case, as the pair rang in the new year together.

The couple - who married in 1997 and have two sons - looked delighted to be seeing in 2020 with their friends Massimo Serini, Karen Alder and Sarah Dewey, with Firth's arm wrapped around Giuggioli. On Instagram, Livia shared two pics of the group 10 years apart and wrote, ‘How we ended and how we began ❤️ @massimoserini.official @karenalder @sarahdeweymassage Colin and many more. Bye 2019 and hello new decade.’

Need a refresher with what happened between the pair? We’ve got you. Firth and Giuggioli made headlines in March 2018 when she admitted to having an affair with an Italian journalist named Marco Brancaccia while she and Colin were separated between 2015 and 2016. This came after Giuggioli accused the Italian journalist of harassing her with 'frightening' messages. The police investigated, but the man in question – Brancaccia – denied the accusation and told The Times that she was lying to hide their relationship. In the end, Giuggioli confirmed the relationship. At the time, their rep told The Times: ‘A few years ago, Colin and Livia privately made the decision to separate. During that time, Livia briefly became involved with former friend Mr. Brancaccia. The Firths have since reunited.’

The statement continued, ‘Subsequently, Mr. Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months, much of which is documented. For obvious reasons, the Firths have never had any desire to make this matter public.’

Brancaccia denied this, telling The Times, ‘I wrote an email to Colin about my relationship with Livia, which I now regret sending, and she filed a complaint against me for stalking out of fear that I could go public with what she had revealed to me about her marriage and work.’

Last month, their reps confirmed the split, saying, ‘Colin and Livia Firth have separated. They maintain a close friendship and remain united in their love for their children. They kindly ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.’
