For a lesson in how to handle social media as a celebrity (you know, without making people hate you), we all turn to Chrissy Teigen. For the facts, for the lols, and for the gimmick-free relatability that evades so many of her peers, there's no denying that Chrissy nails Twitter time and time again.
But one of our personal highlights was when Teigen managed to provoke President Donald Trump so much that he was forced to block her. Almost a year ago, committed Trump hater Chrissy shared a screenshot of the @realDonalTrump Twitter account having blocked her. After nine years of Twitter criticism, she explained, it had finally happened. The trigger tweet? 'lol no one likes you'.
Clearly, it didn't take much to rile the current President of the United States of America, which perhaps goes to lend some explanation to his flippant and explosive Twitter rampages. Nevertheless, pre-Tweet-blockage, Chrissy was always there to navigate, translate and discredit the rubbish spouted from the Trump account, all the while remaining one of our favourite A-listers to follow online.
The Trump-Teigen Twitter saga continues, though. On Wednesday a federal judge ruled that Donald Trump may no longer block people on Twitter. That's right. It's been legally deemed unconstitutional for the president to block people because of their political views (one of the Trump administrations favourite pass times, it seems). According to Huffington Post, the court ruled that Trump's Twitter feed was a 'public forum' and therefore he shouldn't be able to block people from viewing his various declarations.
On hearing the announcement, Chrissy shared a video of herself watching the news on Twitter and said: 'well well well we meet again @realDonaldTrump'. Cue the overjoyed exclamations of 'yaaaaasss', 'go get 'em' and celebratory emojis.
It's a word that is without doubt overused whenever the media gives a celebrity a proverbial pat on the back for doing something normal, but in the realm of celebs online the term 'relatable' really does belong to Chrissy Teigen.
There's not a whisper of the false, money-motivated promotion of expensive and unnecessary products that we've become so used to seeing on other famous Instagram feeds. While we know that there are many aspects of Chrissy's life - the TV work, the awards, the parties, the superstar husband, the glam squad, and so on - that will never mirror our own, they're not flaunted or shared under the thinly veiled endorsement of a lifestyle that we'll never be able to emulate.
Chrissy has often spoken about how social media makes her feel inadequate. She's candidly addressed how the online world makes her feel insecure about her own body and desperate for one that looks like the one promoted on our phone screens. Make-up selfies aren't for her, stretch marks really aren't a big deal and she told us that yes, period skin affects the rich and famous too.
Chrissy Teigen's authentic engagement in a digital universe that we all have eyes on is pretty crucial in its frequently misleading state, and quite frankly the way she handles it all makes her an absolute hero. Not because she claims to know it all or portrays the Instagram endorsed image of perfection that we like to assume we need to be too, but because she serves as a sincere reminder that there is another side to the stressfully curated glossy social media personas that many of us tirelessly faun over - a human side. And the fact that a big part of brand Teigen is calling things how she sees them (and by extension, trolling Trump's rubbish to the extent of eventually blocking) is only the very welcome icing on the cake.
