But in this age of unusual celebrity baby names, why are we even surprised?

It’s 2018 and in the era of Chicago West, Stormi Websterand Kulture Kiari Cephus we rarely bat an eyelid over of the unusual monikers these celebrities bestow upon their offspring. In fact, ever since Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin welcomed little baby Apple on to the scene way back in 2004, it’s been written into showbiz law that if you fail to name your child after some form of food, element or a dodgy nightclub in suburban Kent, then you’re likely to be cast out of the elite celeb circle.

However, when radio presenter Chris Evans announced the arrival of his new born twins, referring to them as Ping and Pong, the internet exploded with many of the public thinking he'd really taken the biscuit (and nope, that's not the latest addition to Jamie Oliver's uniquely named brood).

Breaking the news on Thursday morning, Radio 2 Breakfast Show guest host Sara Cox announced that Chris’ wife Natasha Shishmanian had given birth to twins, a boy and a girl, late on Wednesday night.

A statement from Chris himself read:“Ping and Pong arrived safe and well last night.”

Right.

He continued: “Ping popped her head out at 22:10, Pong popped his head out 12 minutes later at 22 minutes past 10. Both healthy, both strong, happy and blessed, as was mum throughout. Infinite thanks to the amazing team at Frimley Park Hospital, amazing people, amazing professionals, helping dreams come true. Thank you.”

It took approximately 0.3333 seconds for the Twittersphere to speak out on Chris’ interesting choice of names for the two new arrivals.

"Just read that Chris Evans has named his twins Ping and Pong, seriously, what idiot would do that to their own kids?," someone commented.

Thankfully, though, other Twitter users were able to pick up on Chris’ subtle attempt at humour, suggesting Ping and Pong may not be the twins' real names.

“If you believe Chris Evans will call his twins ping and pong, you need to re evaluate your life,” one person wrote.

Things almost took a turn towards political debate, when another Twitter user wrote: "There are people out there who genuinely believe Chris Evans has named his twins Ping and Pong. This is how Brexit happened."

Here are some of the best reactions to Chris Evans calling his twins Ping and Pong.

Chris, who is already father to Jade, 32, Noah, nine, Eli, six, had previously joked about what he was planning on naming the new arrivals. Speaking on his breakfast show with guest Janet Jackson, Chris admitted Ping and Pong were ‘working titles’.

“It’s so cute I want to keep them as the names Ping and Pong,” he said, before adding: “Or middle names."
