Remember Freaky Friday, the Lindsay Lohan film where she switches bodies with mother Jamie Lee Curtis after getting fortune cookies at a Chinese restaurant?
Well, rapper and comedian Lil Dicky has used the same concept for a music video where he swaps bodies with Chris Brown, after a fan tells him he’s ‘not a real rapper’ and he wishes he could be ‘cool’ like other people in Hip Hop.
The first inkling that this video was going to be problematic was when the waiter at the Chinese restaurant Lil Dicky is dining in understands English perfectly when it’s central to the plot (he hears Chris Brown saying he wishes he could be someone else for the day) but doesn’t understand English when it’s funnier that way (he replies ‘yes’ when asked to help decide between two dishes).
It doesn’t take long for the video to descend into truly troubling territory, after Lil Dicky and Chris Brown swap bodies, they explore the new benefits.
For Lil Dicky in Chris Brown’s body the benefits are; being able to dance, sing, play basketball, and… say the N-word.
‘Wonder if I can say the n-word (wait for real?)
Wait, can I really say the n-word?
What up, my n_gga? (woo) What up, my n_gga?
Big ups, my n_gga, we up, my n_gga
You pussy ass n_gga, man, fuck y’all n_ggas
'Cause I’m that n_gga, n_gga, n_gga, n_gga
I’m that n*gga’
Yes friends, these are literally the lyrics.
Why are some white people obsessed with the N-word? Of all the words in world that they can say, this one tantalises them the most. Is it the fact that it’s forbidden that makes the word appealing? Or does Lil Dicky think saying it makes him cool (read: black) like the other people in Hip Hop?
People seem to have missed all of the above, and are instead upset that Kendall Jenner is working with Chris Brown.
She appears at the very end of the video, Lil Dicky transforms into several people after Chris Brown; Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled and Kendall Jenner, whose line is: 'Huh, I'm Kendall Jenner// I got a vagina, I’m gonna explore that right now (woo, woo)// Holy shit, I got a vagina (uh), I'm gonna learn// I’m gonna understand the inner workings of a woman.’
Profound.
