Charli XCX is not only one of our favourite popstars, but an absolute boss. As well as creating her latest album, Charli, which includes hits with Lizzo{ =nofollow}, Christine and the Queens and Kim Petras, she has just released her own TV show - I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry - about the kickass girlgroup she put together. Oh, and as if that isn’t enough, she also runs her own experimental pop label, Vroom Vroom Recordings.

However, unsurprisingly, because she is a woman in the industry, Charli says she’s often underestimated. ‘I am an artist, a songwriter who’s co written multiple “hits” for myself/other artists, a video director, exec producer of a Netflix show, A&R, I run a label, co manage 2 artists,’ she tweeted yesterday. ‘If I was a man I’d be hailed as some sort of music industry god but as a woman I’m just - doubted?’

‘BTW, I don’t need people to feel sorry for me or anything,’ she added. ‘I’m just saying it how it is. women in this industry are constantly questioned on their validity... “did she REALLY write that?” “can she REALLY produce?” “does she REALLY know what she’s doing?” I see it all the time.'

And Charli really does know what she's doing. Speaking to Grazia before she wrote the tweets, the musician told us that she approached Netflix with the idea for her show which follows the four-piece group she masterminded. ‘I was thinking how to launch an artist in 2019,’ she said, explaining how the show came about. ‘And there's so many ways that you can do that. I kind of thought about the fact that massive streaming platform visually [to promote music] hasn't really been done before. So I approached Netflix, with this idea of creating this show about bands that nobody's heard of yet.'

‘I'm kind of using the platform as a way to tell their story, and as a way to understand and get to know their music,' she added. 'The show follows them up until they release their first song and play their first show. So we were filming for five months. We were filming every day, together in a house we were filming, making them making their music, Nasty Cherry kind of rehearsing for their show.’

I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry is available to stream on Netflix now.
