Cate Blanchett has been announced as the head of the Cannes Film Festival jury for 2018. The actress and producer will be the 12th woman to take on this role, which last year was filled by the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.

‘We’re very pleased to welcome a rare and unique artist with talent and conviction,’ Cannes president Pierre Lescure and delegate general Thierry Fremaux said in a joint statement. ‘Our conversations this autumn convince us she will be a committed president, and a passionate and generous spectator.’

The actress, who most recently visited the festival for the premiere of Carol in 2015, will head up a panel of actors and filmmakers, which will select the winners of the festival’s prizes, including the prestigious Palme D’Or. Cate will be the third female jury president in the last decade, following director Jane Campion in 2014 and actress Isabelle Huppert in 2009.

‘I have been to Cannes in many guises over the years – as an actress, producer, in the marketplace, the Gala-sphere and in competition but never solely for the sheer pleasure of watching the cornucopia of films this great festival harbours,’ Cate said.

‘I am humbled by the privilege and responsibility of presiding over this year’s jury. This festival plays a pivotal role in bringing the world together to celebrate story: that strange and vital endeavour that all peoples share, understand and crave.’

Cate was one of over 300 women in Hollywood who joined forces to present the Time’s Up initiative earlier this week, which is designed to tackle sexual harassment at work in all industries and at every level.

‘Any male who’s in a position of authority or power, you know, whether he be a film producer or the president of the United States, who thinks it’s his prerogative to sexually intimidate or abuse women that they come into contact with, whether in the workplace or otherwise, they need to be held to account,’ she said in September.
