A primeministerial baby is on the way, according to reports from Downing Street last night. While Carrie Symonds’s pregnancy has been termed ‘Westminster’s worst kept secret’ in recent weeks, the news has now graduated from rumour to official via a post on Carrie’s private Instagram page.
‘Many of you already know but for my friends that still don't, we got engaged at the end of last year... and we've got a baby hatching early summer. Feel incredibly blessed,' she wrote. Speculation has been that the pair got engaged whilst on holiday in Mustique over Christmas - putting Boris Johnson on track to be the first prime minister to get married while in office for 250 years.
The last baby to be born in Downing Street was David Cameron's daughter Florence. The Prime Minister's wife Samantha gave birth to her, their fourth child, three months after the 2010 election. Happily for Carrie and Boris the climbing frames the Camerons built in the garden of Downing Street are still said to be in situ.
Carrie’s insta comes just 11 days after Boris Johnson’s divorce with second wife Marina Wheeler was finalised. While the baby will be her first, the little one is thought to be Boris’ sixth. The Prime Minister has four adult children with ex Marina, and fathered a fifth with property developer Helen Macintyre.
A spokesperson for Boris and Carrie gave a statement to the Mirror, confirming the news: ‘The Prime Minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer.'
It perhaps explains why Carrie has kept such a low public profile since Boris’s General Election victory in December 2019 - barely having been seen in public. And throws a new perspective on the 'Brexit baby boom' Boris predicted twelve weeks ago....
