Cries of ‘Cardi Bfor President’ can be heard (well, read) all over the internet today after the rapper posted a video expressing her concern over the current state of the US government.
In case you’ve been too worried about Brexit to notice what’s going on, the US government has been partially shut down for 27 days and counting because Donald Trump is refusing to approve a budget unless it includes $5.7 billion (£4.43bn) to fund his famous wall along the Mexico border.
The opposition Democratic Party has rejected this proposal, and so 800,000 government employees haven’t been paid since the shutdown began - it's the longest shutdown in US history.
‘I just wanna remind you that it's been a little bit over three weeks,’ Cardi B says in her video addressing the issue.
‘Trump is now ordering... federal government workers to go back to work without getting paid. This is serious. Our country is in a hellhole right now. All for a... wall.’
‘I feel like we need to take some action,' she continues. 'I don't know what type of action... because this is not what I do. But... I'm scared.’
The expletive-filled video has nine million views and over 60 thousand comments at the time of writing, and garnered widespread respect and attention. ‘Couldn’t have even said it better myself. #CardiB knows what is up. She might not know what to do, but if she can get y’all to listen up and pay attention’ wrote @TylerJAlexander on Twitter.
‘I love how Cardi makes a compelling argument in her own way. We get it @iamcardib and we’re scared too,’ tweeted @beans4reezy.
And it’s not just members of the public who are agreeing with her, CNN reporter Faith Karimi even captured an exchange between two democratic law makers debating whether or not they should retweet Cardi’s video.
Could this be the start of a political career for Cardi? She claimed to love political science in an interview with GQ in April last year. ‘I love government. I'm obsessed with presidents. I'm obsessed to know how the system works,’ she told GQ’s Caity Weaver in an interview.
‘[Franklin Delano Roosevelt] helped us get over the Depression, all while he was in a wheelchair. Like, this man was suffering from polio at the time of his presidency, and yet all he was worried about was trying to make America great—make America great again for real. He's the real 'Make America Great Again,' because if it wasn't for him, old people wouldn't even get Social Security.’
