Cara Delevingne Slams Unrealistic 'Sexist' Superhero Films

There’s been a longstanding issue with superhero films; despite all the CGI, big budgets, carefully choreographed fight sequences and ensemble casts of international superstars there’s something dragging them back into the 1950’s. And that’s how women are treated so differently to men in the films. They’re given bit parts secondary to the male heroes, they’re there as a distraction to the man doing his job of saving the world, and even when they’re not a romantic distraction, they’re dressed in next to nothing. And this is what Cara Delevingne takes umbrage with.

The model-turned-actress told Empire that her upcoming role in Suicide Squad is different: ‘There are only three girls in it but in my opinion they have the best roles.’

But that: ‘Generally though, superhero movies are totally sexist.

‘Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis,’ she added: ‘No one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute.’

What we like about this is that Cara - who has been a bikini model, and even a mostly-fully-naked model at times - knows there's a time and place for wearing very little. This might cause a little ruckus as DC Comics is behind Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman, both coming out next year.

It’s also to be seen whether Suicide Squad is as right on as Cara claims, but if she’s speaking out about the sexism in the film industry, you can’t really blame her for being in a less-than-perfect film, gender-balance wise. Now it’s time for the superhero film makers to listen up and take heed.
