It was a big night in showbiz yesterday, the 40th VMA awards happened in New York, where the stars of the music industry gathered to perform and wear their most shocking - and fabulous - outfits on the red carpet. But the VMAs were slightly overshadowed by some other news, and for a very happy reason: Britney Spears revealed on Instagram that she is engaged to her long-term boyfriend, Sam Asghari.

Cue internet meltdown, and more congratulations and well wishes than we've ever seen. Everyone is delighted that Britney is so happy. (And absolutely same, to be honest.)

Celebrities have also been sharing the love for Britney. Paris Hilton, who recently got engaged herself to Carter Reum, commented on Instagram: 'Congratulations love!! 😍 So happy for you! Welcome to the club! 👰🏼💍' Seth Rogen simply wrote: 'Mazel!' Even Jedward got in on the action, tweeting Sam's Instagram post with the caption: 'Fuck yeah @britneyspears is engaged.'

Though many people commenting on Britney's Instagram post also had one huge piece of advice, and that is for Sam to sign a pre-nuptial agreement, which would set out how assets will be divided if they divorce or the marriage is dissolved. Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer also had the same idea, simply commenting on Instagram: 'Make him sign a prenup.' (At the time of writing, the comment almost has 16,000 likes.)

Sam is a dancer and fitness trainer, and the pair met on the set of the Slumber Party music video in 2016. The engagement is huge news, as Britney is still currently fighting to end her conservatorship (last week, her father, Jamie, filed court papers to end it). In June, Britney told the court the strain the conservatorship had on her personal life. She said she wanted to marry Sam (the conservatorship would have to approve this) and have children with him, but couldn't as she had been fitted with an IUD against her will.
