#freebritney has started trending on Twitter again, this time after Kanye West announced his bid for president. Following the rapper's announcement at the weekend, fans pushed for an end to Britney's personal conservatorship which has lasted over a decade. As one person tweeted, ‘Britney Spears goes through a mental health crisis publicly and she loses her rights. Kanye West goes through a mental health crisis publicly and he runs for president.'

The popstar has been in a conservatorship since 2008, and her father Jamie is believed to still be handling her finances, with a professional co-conservator handling her personal affairs due to her father's health issues. Speaking to USA Today last year, her Los Angeles lawyer Samuel Ingham said Britney ‘does not object’ to the co-conservators handling her personal affairs and finances, and that's why she didn't attend a hearing last year.

Kanye, who was hospitalised in 2016 due to a psychiatric emergency, announced his bid for president this weekend - with support from wife Kim Kardashian and Tesla founder Elon Musk. 'We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION,' he wrote on Twitter. It is unclear if West has filed any official paperwork to appear on state election ballots this year or which political party he would be running for.

While some fans pointed out the differences between Kanye and Britney's treatment, one asked Kanye if he would help free Britney if ever he was elected: '@kanyewest when you are elected into the Oval Office will you please help #FreeBritney??'
