Britney Spears enjoyed her first glass of champagne in nearly 14 years over the weekend. The singer - who says she has been on 'cloud nine' since being granted her freedom - was celebrating the end of her conservatorship with fiancé Sam Asghari at Catch in West Hollywood.

Updating her fans on Instagram, Britney wrote, 'What an amazing weekend … I felt like I was on cloud 9 the whole time !!! I actually got my first glass of champagne at the most beautiful restaurant I've ever seen last night !!!! I’m celebrating my freedom and my B day for the next two months !!!!!!!!!!! I mean after 13 years … I think I’ve waited long ENOUGH !!!!'

And, of course, Britney really has waited long enough to embrace her freedom - and sip on a glass of champagne in a gorgeous restaurant. It's thought Britney has been sober since the start of her conservatorship in 2008, which was prompted by the singer's public breakdown. Her father Jamie had served as her conservator for the past 13 years - and Britney has previously described the conservatorship as abusive and publicly stated that she no longer wanted her father in a position to control her life. But on August 12, Jamie finally agreed to step down as the singer’s conservator, following a petition by Britney's appointed attorney, former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart.

As well as not being able to drink, Britney was not allowed to drive (until July, when her licence was reinstated), control her own finances, get married, or have another child (in a court testimony, Britney said she had been fitted with an IUD against her will). Happily, Britney is now engaged to her partner dancer Sam, who has been vocally supporting the singer on social media throughout the case. The pair - who met on a set of a video in 2016 - announced their engagement in September. His manager, Brandon Cohen, confirmed the to People magazine. He said, 'The couple made their long-standing relationship official today and are deeply touched by the support, dedication and love expressed to them.'

We hope Britney continues to enjoy her new-found freedom.
