After making the decision to drop ‘Pitt’ from her surname, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Vivienne has once again created speculation that tensions are fraught with her father, after she attended the 2024 Tony Awards with her mother on Father’s Day, instead of spending the Sunday with him.
There to celebrate their musical The Outsiders’, which had 12 nominations and four wins including Best Musical, Vivienne colour-coordinated with her mother - who filed for divorce from Brad Pitt on 20 September 2016 - wearing teal suit trousers, matching waistcoat and bow tie, paired with converse. Angelina wore a custom teal Atelier Versace strapless velvet dress.
Speaking about how their roles as Producer and Producer’s Assistant on The Outsiders came about, Angelina admitted that it was her daughter who encouraged her to become a part of the team.
The Mr and Mrs Smith actress told Deadline, ‘My daughter Viv loves theatre. She appreciates all theatre but she certainly knows what she feels close to and what she responds to. She went to see The Outsiders at La Jolla about five times and was telling me about it, and I had read the book, and I’d seen the film years ago.’
The pair then saw the play together. ‘Really, as a mother, as a person, I was watching it, but I was really watching the effect it was having on my young daughter and what she was telling me about herself,’ Angelina explained. ‘And I was learning what about it was important to her and why it connected so deeply to her.’
‘Vivienne would watch the show and give me the most amazing notes. Like, incredible eye. So, it was a wonderful, wonderful support, and also, obviously, made the work better.’
It was actually through The Outsiders’ playbill that it was revealed in May that Vivienne had dropped Pitt from her surname, being credited as Producer’s Assistant Vivienne Jolie instead of Vivienne Jolie-Pitt in the literature.
Whilst it is unclear whether or not Vivienne has legally changed her name, she’s the latest of Angelina and Brad’s children to publicly distance themselves from the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood actor.
Zahara has also appeared to have taken similar action, as in November - when she was inducted into the AKA sorority at Spelman College - she referred to herself simply as Zahara Marley Jolie. Her brothers Pax and Maddox have also reportedly dropped Pitt from their double-barrelled surnames.
So far Shiloh is seemingly the only sibling to have taken legal action to distance herself from Brad, filing paperwork on her 18th birthday on 27 May to drop Pitt from her surname and is instead now referred to as Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.
