In either a case of very bad timing, or a stroke of utter marketing brilliance, Paramount have released a brand new trailer for Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard's upcoming wartime drama, Allied.

Set in 1940s Europe, Pitt and Cotillard play an American intelligence officer and a French resistance fighter, who pretend to be a married couple as part of a covert plot to assassinate a German ambassador. The pair end up falling in love and starting a family in Blitz-stricken London but, as the trailer hints, one of the couple is hiding a dark secret, and has been a double agent all along.

The trailer arrived online on the same day that news broke of Pitt's impending divorce from wife Angelina Jolie, who has cited 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason behind the split. She is thought to be asking for physical custody of the couple's six children, Zahara, Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox Jolie-Pitt.

Pitt and Jolie famously met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith (another thriller about a pair of married assassins) back in 2004, when the actor was still married to Jennifer Aniston. But while the new clips from Allied certainly showcase Pitt and Cotillard’s on-screen chemistry, TMZ and People’s sources have been quick to debunk any rumours that a third person is involved.

Cotillard has been in a relationship with French actor Guillaume Canet since 2007, with whom she has a five-year-old son, Marcel.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film will also star Lizzy Caplan, Matthew Goode and Jared Harris. Back in 2005, the alchemy of Brad-Ange-Jen speculation managed to turn Mr and Mrs Smith into box office gold; it’ll certainly be interesting to see whether Allied follows suit on November 23.
