Last year, on *People'*s Jess Eagle interview, actor Ryan Reynolds revealed that he and his wife actress Blake Lively owed their relationship to a double date.
'[Blake] was on a date with another guy and I was on a date with another girl,' Ryan said, 'and that was the most awkward date for [our] respective partners because we were just, like, fireworks coming across...' [He mimed fireworks to-ing and fro-ing. It was cute.]
Skip forward to this month, and Blake Lively found herself in the very same hotseat. Jess replayed the video of Ryan charismatically recalling their 'sparks flying' moment, and looked to Blake for a response.
'It went well for him,' she quipped, 'I, I, there were no fireworks for me...'
[Tumbleweed]
No, of course there wasn't tumbleweed really. The Gossip Girl star laughed it off and said that they had met a year or so earlier, on the set of Green Lantern, and had remained firm friends. 'We were such good friends for so long and when we both got to know each other, we got to know each other as friends. So that when we were both single we were still trying to find each other's: "Oh, who would be good for you?". You know?! We'd sit around being like: "Do you know anyone?"
'It didn't click for, I mean, a good year and a half of like: "oh hey, wait, hold on, WE could date...!"
So they did. And now they're married. And are parents to 19-month-old daughter James Reynolds. And have another child on the way. Regularly perceived as Hollywood's cutest and funniest couple – check out Ryan's hilarious reaction to Taylor Swifts 'posey' snap at her recent 4th July celebrations – since both have such demanding careers, one wonders what the secret to their success as a couple actually is.
Luckily, Blake revealed that too.
'That's what I appreciate about our relationship,' she said, 'is that he really is... my friend. First and foremost still, not just in our history, but in every day life. He is my friend first.
'And... I think that's the secret to happiness.'
'Secret to happiness'? Hmm, tiny bit cheesey? Don't worry, she brought it back...
'I don't know,' she quickly added, 'I don't know the secret to happiness. But [it's] the secret to my happiness at least.'
Well rescued. And yes, we can imagine it's probably the secret to Ryan's happiness too. May you both remain happy for ever and ever and ever.
XOXO
