It's been ten years since Kanye West took to the stage of MTV's Video Music Awards as Taylor Swift was awarded the gong for Best Female Video, defending Beyoncé and claiming she should have won instead.
Kim Kardashian's husband exclaimed, "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'mma let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!"
Now, new details have emerged about the infamous incident, with Viacom's former president Van Toffler revealing what went on behind the scenes.
First, Toffler revealed he found Taylor and her mother in tears backstage, telling Billboard, "I profusely apologized and I said, 'I'm sorry, we didn't know. I know you have to perform in the next act and let me think about a way we can make it right for you. We're dealing with him now and I'm so sorry it ruined your moment.
"I didn't anticipate I'd have a crying artist and mom to deal with - literally right before she has to go out on Sixth Avenue and stand on a car and sing her song."
Toffler then discovered Beyoncé crying backstage too, revealing, "I walk behind the stage and sure enough there is Beyoncé and her dad, and she is crying. She was like, 'I didn't know this was going to happen, I feel so bad for her.' And that's when it started to click in my head, and maybe hers, about potentially having the whole arc play out in that one night."
In an unusual move, Toffler hinted to Beyoncé that she may well win an award that night and suggested she let Taylor have her moment then.
He added, "I had to indicate to her that she needed to stay, and perhaps this is a way to have this come full circle and let [Taylor] have her moment. I would normally not say anything, but I had two crying artists."
So when the Crazy In Love hitmaker took to the stage to make an acceptance speech, she gave up her moment and said, "I remember being 17 years old, up for my first MTV Award with Destiny’s Child, and it was one of the most exciting moments in my life. So, I’d like for Taylor to come out and have her moment.”
It's also been revealed that P!nk unleashed her wrath onto Kanye in the commercial break that night.
Former MTV Senior Correspondent James Montgomery told Billboard, “Pink walked up to him and got in his face.
"I wasn't close enough to hear the conversation, but she was pointing in his face and nodding her head back and forth, and giving him her two cents about how f****d up this was and then stormed off."
