As the evenings grow darker, we're in need of a good drama to keep us glued to our sofas. Last night, The Sister arrived on ITV, and it's already causing conversation, drawing big audiences and, perhaps most importantly, creeping us all out. That's largely thanks to Bertie Carvel, who plays the sinister and unkempt Bob. Honestly, it took us a while to work out who he was thanks to the role that really brought him to the mainstream in infidelity drama Doctor Foster.
We are not the only ones. 'I cannot BELIEVE that’s Bertie Carvel on The Sister!!!', one social media user tweeted. 'I’ve just found out he’s Doctor Foster’s husband.'
For two series, Bertie played the clean-cut, suited and booted Simon, who is married to the Doctor Foster of the title - depicted by the amazingly intense Suranne Jones - but has an affair with Kate, a young woman played by Jodie Comer. But he has forged quite the impressive career path before that.
He has ticked off many of the classic staples that many fledgling actors aim to achieve - one episode appearances in Holby City, Midsomer Murders and Doctor Who, for example. But he really began to make his mark on the industry via a surprise casting: he played the dastardly Miss Trunchbull in Tim Minchin's musical adaption of Matilda. He won an Olivier for his trouble.
After that, he secured roles in acclaimed police comedy drama Babylon, and won legions of fans through his role as Jonathan Strange in the TV adaptation of beloved novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
An impressive mimic capable of encapsulating a real person's accent, ticks and quirks, Bertie was called upon to play famed political journalist Robin Day in a 2017 episode of The Crown. This became all the more clear through his role as newspaper magnate Rupert Murdoch, who he played in West End Play Ink and again on Broadway. The role won him his second Olivier Award and his first Tony.
The Sister's Bob is the latest example of his versatility as a performer. What's next? With him, it's hard to predict what's in store...
