Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw joined forces this morning to announce the 2016 EE British Academy Film Award nominations - and boy is the competition tough!

Carol and Bridge Of Spies lead the way with an impressive nine nominations each, and The Revenant is hot on their tail with eight. Brooklyn and The Martian are both up for six awards, whilst The Danish Girl has recieved a respectable five nominations.

Eddie Redmayne and Leonardo DiCaprio are once again going head to head for the Best Actor gong, based on their roles in The Danish Girl and The Revenant - two of this year's most talked about contenders. Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender and Byran Cranston are also nominated for their roles in The Martian,* Steve Jobs* and Trumbo.

Cate Blanchett is a strong candidate for the Best Actress BAFTA, following her highly praised performance in Carol, but she faces strong competion from* The Danish Girl's* Alicia Vikander. Saoirse Ronan and Brie Larson are nominated for the award following their performances in Brookyln and The Room, and Maggie Smith is also up for the award for The Lady In The Van.

Leading the way for Best Supporting Actor are The Big Short's Christian Bale and Idris Elba for his role in Beasts Of No Nation. Carol's Rooney Mara is up against Kate Winslet for her portrayal of Joanna Hoffman in Steve Jobs and Brooklyn's Julie Walters for Best Supporing Actress.
