Baby Sussex Mania is Reaching Fever-Pitch as Royal Fans Await News of Harry and Meghan’s First Born

Meghan's baby bump

Settle in to those tenterhooks: precisely no news has issued from Frogmore Cottage, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are believed to be patiently awaiting the birth of their baby. Meanwhile, speculation swirls – the Queen’s choice of all-pink at All Saints Chapel yesterday seems to have all but confirmed rumours that Meghan and Harry’s child is a girl. Bookies have slashed odds on the baby’s sex accordingly, and since Friday the name Ivy has been leading the polls for the new royal, followed closely by Allegra and Grace.

After the couple refused to confirm a due date, eager onlookers have been running sums to calculate a birth in late April or early May; as such, speculation that Meghan is overdue – or has already given birth – is rife, especially following Harry and Megan’s announcement that the new arrival won’t be subject to the now-traditional hospital steps photoshoot, a la Diana and Kate Middleton.

However, and while the country goes crazy, the mum-to-be is said to be ‘incredibly relaxed’ – the Daily Mail reported that, while an overdue baby could spell an induced labour and hospital birth, Duchess Meghan remains in good spirits. Reportedly kept company by her mother Doria Ragland, US television anchor and friend Gayle King – not to mention Prince Harry, who further stoked rumours of an imminent birth when he cancelled part of a scheduled trip to Holland this week – she’s reportedly as keen on a home-birth (like the Queen herself, who gave birth to her four children at either Buckingham Palace or Clarence House) as ever.

Don’t expect the waiting to end anytime soon; Buckingham Palace have said they’ll announce when Meghan goes into labour, but won’t issue any updates until the baby arrives. As for a glimpse of the new Sussex themselves, the couple won’t release any photos for a few days. Agony! Until then, we’ll have to content ourselves with fevered conjecture – little Ivy/Allegra/Grace/Insert-Name-Here will be born more famous than most people’s wildest dreams, so a relatively quiet start to life seems only fair. Now, what’s that we hear about twins?
