Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has married her partner Asser Malik in a small Islamic ceremony in Birmingham. Yesterday, the 24-year-old announced the news on Twitter, sharing pictures of the ceremony and writing: ‘Today marks a precious day in my life. Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead.’
Malala moved to the West Midlands after being shot in the face by a Taliban fighter in Pakistan when she was just 15. She was targeted for speaking out about girls’ right to receive an education, and survived almost fatal injuries. She went on to study at Oxford University, and won the Nobel Peace Prize when she was 17, making her the youngest winner ever.
Yesterday, Malala received congratulations and well wishes from around the world, with her post attracting almost 400,000 likes. But who is her life partner, Asser Malik?
What is Asser Malik's job?
According to his LinkedIn profile, Asser works for the Pakistan Cricket Board as a general manager. Like Malala, he went to school in Pakistan, and went on to study economics and political science at the Lahore University of Management Sciences, graduating in 2012.
How did Malala and Asser Malik meet?
It’s not known how long the couple have been together but, on Asser’s Instagram profile, he and Malala can be seen cheering on the Pakistan cricket team at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham in 2019. Asser also shared one of the couple’s wedding photos yesterday, accompanied by a heart emoji.
Malala’s father Ziauddin Yousafzai told MailOnline that 12 guests were present at the couple’s wedding and that Malala and Asser wouldn’t be going on honeymoon before the semi-final of the T20 World Cup, which will see the Pakistan cricket team take on Australia.
'We are delighted for Malala and Asser but like so many Pakistanis, they are cricket mad,’ he said. 'On Thursday, we will all be watching Pakistan in the semi-final and that includes Malala and Asser, even though they have just got married. They will be at home in front of the television closely following the game. It's a huge match and none of us want to miss it. We are all praying for a Pakistan victory.'
