Harry and Meghan may have dropped a bombshell by announcing that they are to step away from the royal family, but it's not as if they were following every protocol to begin with. The progressive couple have often done things their own way, perhaps hinting toward a future away from the monarchy. Take, for example, the privacy surrounding the birth of Baby Archie. And, after that, the secrecy concerning his godparents.
When Archie was christened in July, there were many rumours surrounding the identity of his godparents. Educated guesses were made, with Meghan's close friend Jessica Mulroney at the top of the list and, less likely, George and Amal Clooney somewhere toward the bottom. But now, two names may have been confirmed.
According to The Sunday Times, Tiggy Pettifer (nee Legge-Bourke) is one of Archie's godmothers. Tiggy was Harry's much-loved nanny in his youth. Mark Dyer, meanwhile, is alleged to be a godfather. Mark is considered one of Harry's mentors, and has been referred to as a 'second father' to him, especially in the aftermath of the death of Princess Diana. A former royal equerry, Mark was responsible for the transportation of the Queen in cars and carriages. And he and Harry are still close: they were even spotted at a pub in Fulham on Friday evening, enjoying a catch-up over a drink. There has, however, been no official confirmation of these reports.
It is likely that Archie has several more godparents, as tradition dictates that a royal child will have several. The private christening, performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, took place at Windsor. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and Doria Ragland, Meghan's mother, were in attendance, but the Queen had an prior engagement.
'The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to share the happiness of this day,' a representative said at the time, 'and would like to thank everyone around the world for their ongoing support. They feel so fortunate to have enjoyed this special moment with family and Archie's godparents.'
It looks like we're a little closer to knowing who they were, at least.
