One's fragrance choice is a matter of personal taste and discretion.

As Christian Dior once said, "A woman's perfume tells more about her than her handwriting."

So, it's a strong statement indeed that Angelina Jolie is content to let her six children decide on what type of scent she wears.

"My kids get to choose my fragrance," the Hollywood director and women's rights advocate tells Elle magazine.

"They have an opinion on what mommy smells like."

Angelina and her ex Brad Pitt have six children – Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

Perhaps fortunately for the actress, the perfume preferences of this gang are rather more sophisticated than ours were as children.

Not for them the sickly-sweet allure of Impulse body spray, or good old CK One (a scent we still love to this day).

Instead, as Angelina explains: "They like it when I wear Mon Guerlain Eau De Parfum."

Angelina says her late mother, the French actress Marcheline Bertrand, is also a big influence when it comes to beauty inspiration. Marcheline died of breast cancer in 2007.

"My first beauty memory comes from my mother," Angelina says. "She was a natural woman, but she had a few special items, like her Guerlain powder, for when she wanted to feel like a lady. I remember it, because it seemed so elegant."

As for Angelina's make-up essentials, the 42-year-old likes to keep things minimal.

"My skincare routine is simple. I use rich oils instead of creams," she says. "In my make-up bag, you'll always find under-eye concealer, perfume and mascara."

Angelina announced she was separating from Brad last September, after 11 years together. The couple had been embroiled in a bitter custody battle but have since decided to put their differences and any sense of "vitriolic hatred" aside for the sake of their kids, Brad said.
