Angelina Jolie was joined by five out of six children on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival last night.
Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 11, and twins Knox and Vivienne, aged nine, turned out to support their mother at the Toronto premiere of The Breadwinner, an animated film about an Afghan girl on which Angelina served as producer. Maddox, her oldest son, wasn't present for the event.
Adapted from a best-selling children’s book by Deborah Ellis, The Breadwinner tells the story of Parvana, an Afghan girl who disguises herself as a boy so that she can work and support her family when her father is imprisoned by the Taliban.
The Jolie-Pitt family were accompanied by Saara Chaudry, who voices Parvana in the film, director Nora Twomey and Sareum Srey Moch, who stars in Angelina’s latest directorial effort First They Killed My Father.
Speaking at a panel at the film festival, Angelina revealed that she fell into directing ‘by accident.’
Referring to her directorial debut Land of Milk and Honey, she explained: ‘It was an accident – I wanted to learn more about the war in Yugoslavia.’
‘I never thought I could make a movie or write one, it was never part of my plan,’ she added, revealing that her directorial work allows her to better explore and understand other cultures.

‘For me it wasn’t just about becoming a director. I believe our world is stronger for diversity and I love to learn about cultures and I love to work with artists from other parts of the world,’ she told the audience at a TIFF ‘In Conversation With…’ panel discussion.
‘It’s the greatest way to deeply learn and know each other - to create together. In my humanitarian work, I’m passionate about that,’ she said. ‘They’re my heroes, the people I’m involved with. They’ve taught me to be a better person, a better mother, what to live by, what to value. If I can do films that bring their stories to life, I think those are important stories.’
When asked for her advice for other actors, Angelina responded: ‘Have a full life. Listen to other actors. Be aware and respond. Be a better person.’
