After actual years of speculation, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are married. The couple, who met on the set of spy movie Mr and Mrs Smith in 2004, had a lot more chemistry off-screen than on (how could an entire film’s worth of the most photogenic people in history trying to destroy each other through intense passion be so dull?)

Nine years later, they now have six children together – as well as him adopting Angelina’s eldest, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, they went on to adopt Zahara Marley and Pax Thien together and have three biological children. Shiloh Nouvel was born in 2006 in Namibia and twins Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline in Nice in 2008.

And now, after being engaged since April 2012, they’re married! The Hollywood powercouple got married in Nice – where the twins were born – on Tuesday, reports the Associated Press. The news that they tied the knot at Château Miraval in the south of France was confirmed by a spokesman.

Jolie – who has a tense relationship with her father Jon Voight – was given away by Maddox and Pax. Zahara and Vivienne threw petals, while Shiloh and Knox were ring bearers.

It makes sense that the kids were so involved in the nuptials; after all, the kids are the entire reason Brad and Angelina got married in the first place.

Many years ago, Brad told everyone – including Ellen DeGeneres on her chat show – that they would wait for equal marriage to happen in America before they would marry: ‘I’ve said that we would not be getting married until everyone in this country has the right to get married’. It was a stance he went on to repeat loads.

But recently, Brad told The Hollywood Reporter: ‘We’d actually like to [get married] and it seems to mean more and more to our kids.

‘We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it until everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.’

Well, it looks like they finally caved. FYI, 31 American states have banned or simply don’t allow same-sex marriage. This is Angelina’s third marriage (she was previously wed to Jonny Lee Miller and then Billy Bob Thornton) and Brad’s second (remember that time he was with Jennifer Aniston? Oh, of course you do.)

Anyway, congratulations Angelina and Brad!
