Andy Murray has drawn attention to the casual sexism which female tennis players face, calling out a sports reporter for a question which entirely ignored their achievements.
Following a defeat by American player Sam Querrey, the former Wimbledon champion attended a post-match press conference, when a reporter began to address Murray by stating that ‘Sam [Querrey] is the first US player to reach a major semi-final since 2009…’
Before he had chance to finish his question, Murray cut him off with a quick adjustment, reminding the journalist that he was referring to ‘male players’ only, and thus discounting the recent achievements of female tennis stars such as Serena and Venus Williams.
Clearly confused by Murray’s entirely correct comment, the reporter went on to ask ‘I beg your pardon?’ before ultimately attempting to laugh off his mistake. Throughout, Murray, who is set to soon become a parent for the second time, remained clearly unimpressed.
His mother Judy shared her pride at her son’s behaviour on Twitter, retweeting the video clip and commenting ‘That’s my boy.’
Earlier in this year’s tournament, Murray led calls for play to begin earlier on Centre Court after the organisers faced criticism for apparently prioritising men’s matches over women’s.
‘I think ideally you would have two men’s and two women’s on Centre, potentially starting the matches a bit earlier would allow for that,’ he said. ‘[They] need to maybe find a way of allowing for an equal split of the men’s and women’s matches across the tournament,’ he said.
Though he may be out of the tournament, Murray's post-match comments certainly make him a winner in our eyes...
