Last night The Golden Globes returned as you've never seen them before, with a live event with actual red carpets, podiums and attendees. Naturally, the nominees all dialled in from home, but we're beginning to see a return to normal in the way award ceremonies take place after a year of Zoom. It all felt a bit strange after twelve months at home, so luckily Amy Poehler and Tina Fey - who have hosted the Globes together several times and previously co-starred together on Saturday Night Live - were back together to take us through proceedings.
Well, not actually together. 30 Rock's Tina hosted from New York, Parks and Recreation's Amy from California, using their separation as grounds for their social distanced comedy stylings. Obviously, they killed it. Here are some of their best moments.
In a year where the HFPA - the Golden Globe voters - were criticised for a lack of diversity, as well as overlooking incredible work like Michaela Coel's I May Destroy You - you might think that Tina and Amy wouldn't go too hard on the people paying their wage for the night. But you'd be wrong.
'The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of around 90 international, no-Black journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search for a better life,' said Tina.
'Emily In Parisis nominated for Best TV Series Musical Or Comedy, and I, for one, cannot wait to find out which it is,' she added. 'French Exit is what I did after watching the first episode of Emily in Paris.'
'Everybody is understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices,' Amy contributed. 'Look, a lot of flashy garbage got nominated, but that happens. That's, like, their thing. But a number of Black actors and Black-led projects were overlooked.... The point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important and there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press. I realise, HFPA, maybe you guys didn't get the memo because your workplace is a back booth of a French McDonald's, but you gotta change that.'
Tina even acknowledged Soul, the acclaimed Disney Pixar film which she lent her voice for.
'Soul is a beautiful Pixar animated movie where a middle aged Black man's soul accidentally gets knocked out of his body and into a cat,' she said. 'The HFPA really responded to this movie because they do have five cat members.'
'It's hard to tell them apart because movie theaters were closed and we watched everything on our phones,' Amy pointed out, explaining that the line between TV and Film categories has blurred in the last year.
'Now, TV is the one that I watch five hours straight, but a movie is the one that I don't turn on because it's two hours. I don't want to be in front of my TV for two hours. I want to be in front of the TV for one hour five times.'
Other than that lampooning, our favourite Tina/Amy moments came at the expense of Music, the controversial film directed by Sia. 'Sia’s controversial Music is nominated for Best International Flopperoonie,' said Tina. 'I don’t want to get into it, guys, but it’s really problematic. Twitter is saying it’s the most offensive casting since Kate Hudson was the Weightwatchers spokesperson.'
Also up for some slating was James Corden, who was criticised for his depiction of a camp gay man in The Prom.
'The Queen’s Gambit is whatever James Corden was up to in The Prom, I guess', shrugged Tina.
The event saw some big wins for Brits, with Rosamund Pike, Emma Corrin, Josh O'Connor, Daniel Kaluuya, Gillian Anderson, Sacha Baron Cohen and Anya Taylor-Joy walking away with the coveted prizes.
