Amanda Holden has been making headlines. Not for Britain's Got Talent related reasons - but because she broke lockdown to see her parents. According to The Sun, the presenter was reported to police for travelling 215 miles from London to Cornwall. But, before you make judgement, it's important to note this wasn't just for a nice catch up - according to Amanda she had received a distressing call from her stepdad, and so she felt it was necessary to travel.
A spokesperson said she was 'devastated' about having to make the difficult decision. 'On balance Amanda felt the round trip to Cornwall necessary to contain the matter at her family home. The very personal situation has now been aided and Amanda is back in London,' they said. 'Amanda did not act on a whim and has adhered to Covid rules every step of the way in all three lockdowns. Amanda is aware of the travel rules and is devastated she had to break them on this one occasion.'
Importantly, the statement added that Amanda's parents are vaccinated - and as Amanda is tested for coronavirus once a week - that she didn't feel she was putting her parents at risk. It's believed she hasn't seen them in over a year. And she didn't see anyone else on the visit.
There has been some backlash about the breach, with locals telling The Sun they weren't happy about her potentially endangering locals. Amanda's name has been trending on Twitter, and it has since been reported she 'dodged a fine' for the visit. Since, there have been stories about how she will be missing from her Heart breakfast show - which was, actually, a pre-planned break because it's February half-term. But is the reaction really fair?
Of course, restrictions are tough for everyone and most people have been following the rules to the letter. Including Amanda, who even donated the profits of her Over The Rainbow single to the NHS. This one breach wasn't for a holiday, or a drive around Barnard Castle (Dominic Cummings, looking at you), or throwing a massive party (hello, Rita Ora) - it was because she was worried about her elderly parents. Many would do the same, no matter how much they didn't want to break the rules.
