Congratulations are in order for Amal and George Clooney, who have welcomed their twins today.

A rep for the couple confirmed the news to Page Six, saying: 'This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine.'

'George is sedated and should recover in a few days,' the rep jokingly added.

Amal's parents have both expressed their happiness at the arrival of their 'beautiful' new grandchildren. Bara Alamuddin, who was in London with her daughter at the time of the birth, told AFP: 'We are over the moon. It was a beautiful delivery. The babies are beautiful and are doing well.'

Her father, Ramzi, added that 'They are in great health, all is perfect. I am very happy for them.'

Last year, TV host Julie Chen revealed the news on The Talk, confirming that the couple would welcome two new arrivals in June.

'Congratulations are in order for George and Amal Clooney! The Talk has confirmed that the 55-year-old superstar and his highly accomplished 39-year-old attorney wife are expecting twins,' Chen told viewers. 'Now, what we did find out that no one else is reporting, is that the twins are due this June!'

Amal first sparked pregnancy rumours earlier last year, when she appeared to show off a burgeoning baby bump at a screening of The White Helmets in London.

The couple, who were married in a lavish ceremony in Venice in September 2014, are both first time parents. The four-day wedding celebrations took place at the Aman Grande Canal Hotel and the Belmond Cipriani Hotel, with Amal wearing a dress designed by Oscar de la Renta. Guests included close friends Cindy Crawford and Randy Gerber, as well as Matt Damon, Anna Wintour and Bono.

The 38-year-old human rights lawyer begun dating the Hollywood heavyweight in October 2013, becoming engaged seven months later. He was previously married to Talia Balsam from 1989-1993, before dating a series of glamorous women throughout the Nineties and Noughties.

The former bachelor had previously stated he wouldn't marry again or have children, telling the Express as recently as 2014: "I keep saying I'll never get married again or have children but people just don't want to believe me."

Congratulations to the happy couple.
