After eighteen years as a Victoria’s Secret angel, it seems Adriana Lima may be hanging up her wings for good. The model, who has walked in the annual Victoria’s Secret extravaganza every year since 1999, has taken to Instagram to share the news that she will be following a different career path - one that doesn't involve taking her clothes off.
Writing on Instagram, the Brazilian supermodel explained that following a request to film ‘a sexy video’ to be shared on social media, she had a moment of realisation
‘Even though I have done many of this type, something had changed in me,’ Lima wrote.
‘When a friend approached me to share that she was unhappy with her body, then it made me think…that every day in my life, I wake up thinking, “how do I look?”. Was I going to be accepted in my job? And in that moment I realized that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit a stereotype that society/social media/fashion etc imposed.’
While she does not identify what exactly prompted her shift in mindset, she makes it clear that she will change the way she works.
‘I thought that’s not a way of living and beyond that.... that’s not physically and mentally healthy, so I decided to make that change..... I will not take of my clothes anymore for a empty cause.
Although she does not explicitly say she will give up her role with Victoria’s Secret, her words have caused speculation that she will no longer be modelling for the lingerie giant. In fact, Glamour US noticed that the mother of two had already unfollowed Ed Razek, the senior creative executive at Victoria's Secret, and a few of her fellow Victoria's Secret models on Instagram.
