The new intake for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the voting body for the Oscars) is the most diverse in its history.
Amongst the new members are Luther star Idris Elba, Star Wars' John Boyega, Emma Watson and Tina Fey.
Of the 683 film industry figures invited to join, almost half are female, which brings the percentage of women in the organisation up from 25% to 27% (a small leap, yes, but it's a start).
41% of the new invitees are people of colour, who will now make up 11% of the body (up from 8% last year.) Again, it's a small step - but it's a long overdue step in the right direction.
The news comes in the wake of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, which saw the Academy draw criticism for the lack of diversity shown in the Oscars nominations, with actors like Idris Elba, Michael B Jordan and Will Smith perceived as being snubbed for their strong performances in Beasts Of No Nation, Creed and Conscussion respectively.
Earlier this year, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs promised that the organisation would aim to double the amount of women and people of colour in its membership by 2020. She told Variety that the new list of invitees was a 'major step forward,' adding: 'In the next four years, it’s important to finalize the goal that we set. The conversation is continuing. I think there is going to be a lot of positive energy that will pollinate and make more.'
Other invitees include Oscar winning Room star Brie Larson, Eva Mendes, Alicia Vikander, Rachel McAdams, Michael B Jordan, Oscar Isaac, Rachel McAdams and director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
