best skincare for winter cold weather

There are only so many beauty products one human being can try. That's not the sound of me throwing down some sort of gauntlet, rather the conclusion I've reached after hours, days and perhaps even weeks of attempting to trial as many lotions, potions and lipsticks that happen to cross my desk. Oh sure, it was fun at first. But after my sensitive skin started reacting to every other product, particularly in colder weather, I decided enough was enough. I had to strip back my entire skincare routine and identify the things that really worked for me and made me feel good.

Things feel bleak for many of us right now following the weekend's news that Christmas will not be what anyone of us had hoped for. It's also the shortest day of the year and the skies are grey. But take heart – after today, the days will gradually start getting longer, giving us more daylight hours and – crucially – more much-needed vitamin D. But things may be taking a toll on your skin, which is no surprise.

So, in a bid to make us all feel better, I've decided to share my ultimate winter skin saviours, which have been making my face feel better every day in the last couple of weeks. And because I am but one person – and therefore only one face – I've also called on my esteemed Grazia colleagues for their advice, too. At least, as we head into January 2021, you can feel good about your face.

The Best Beauty Products To Save Winter Skin

QMS Medicosmetics, Redness Relief Complex, £1291 of 14

QMS Medicosmetics, Redness Relief Complex, £129

This was recommended to me by Rowan Hall-Farisse, head trainer at QMSand the woman responsible for the best facial I've ever had. I often struggle with redness, particularly during the winter, and it seems to come on sporadically and for no particular reason. I've been putting this serum on in the evening and it's made a world of difference. It's so moisturising that unless you struggle with very dry skin, you may find you don't need anything on top. It's expensive but you don't need a lot at a time and I can honestly say it's worth every penny.

111 Skin, Anti Blemish Bio Cellulose Facial Mask, £202 of 14

111 Skin, Anti Blemish Bio Cellulose Facial Mask, £20

I love the idea of face masks and they always feel luxurious to use but I find that my skin tends to react badly to most. This anti-blemish mask, however, is a total wonder product and I've been hooked since I first tried it. It's like a sheet mask but split into two sections for the top and bottom halves of your face. The upper mask treats diet, hair product, and perspiration related spots, minimising sebum that supports bad bacteria. The lower part concentrates on calming severe inflammation and irritation caused by hormonal acne. Plus, it's one of the products Jennifer Aniston swears by. And if it's good enough for her...

Head East, Natural Epsom Bath Salts, £14.993 of 14

Head East, Natural Epsom Bath Salts, £14.99

The first product from new brand Head East, these bath salts are packed with magnesium, which helps to manage stress levels, promotes better sleep and eases muscle tension thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. If, like so many right now, you're struggling with poor sleep and general feelings of stress, it's worth trying these out in a hot bath a few times a week. At £14.99 for 3kg, they're great value, too.

Tata Harper, Water-Lock Moisturizer Starter Kit, £594 of 14

Tata Harper, Water-Lock Moisturizer Starter Kit, £59

This is one of the best moisturisers I've used and made a noticeable difference to my skin in just over a week. With a gel-cream texture, it's full of hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump skin while pomegranate extracts and orange-derived peptides both trap water in skin and help to maintain the skin's barrier. I use it at night and wake up feeling refreshed and without any sign of dry skin. And once you've bought the starter kit, you simply top up with the refill pods, making for a more sustainable approach to your daily routine.

Legology, Air-Lite Daily Lift For Legs, £455 of 14

Legology, Air-Lite Daily Lift For Legs, £45

A friend once recommended this to me and I've never looked back. Designed to reduce any tightness caused by fluid retention, it makes legs feel genuinely lighter, soothing any aches and pains along the way. It also hydrates and even works to make your skin tone look more even.

Jo Malone, English Pear and Freesia Bath Oil, £20 at Selfridges6 of 14

Jo Malone, English Pear and Freesia Bath Oil, £20 at Selfridges

Ok, so this isn't strictly for my face but as far as winter skin goes, this makes me feel so pampered. Even if you swear by the shower, pour a little of this delicious fragrance into a hot bath, relax and emerge feeling nothing short of amazing. It makes skin feel softer and, naturally, it leaves you smelling better than ever.

The Body Shop, Vitamin E Night Cream, £157 of 14

The Body Shop, Vitamin E Night Cream, £15

Recently, I tried an incredibly expensive moisturiser that I assumed would give me the best skin of my life. When I broke out into what felt like a hundred spots, I realised that price isn't always reflective of quality. I could wax lyrical about The Body Shop until you're begging me to stop, but what I will say is that on a mission to rid myself of blemishes, I returned to this night cream and already – after just a week or so – my skin has cleared up. It's gentle, nourishing and ensures you wake up with brilliant skin.

Beauty Pie, Like Sun Bio-Optimized Vitamin D3 and K2 Softgels, £408 of 14

Beauty Pie, Like Sun Bio-Optimized Vitamin D3 and K2 Softgels, £40

Given the shorter days and gloomy skies, Beauty Pie's new vitamin D supplement has come at the perfect time. Just one tablet contains the equivalent of 15 minutes of Miami-strength sunshine (without the need for SPF, obviously) which is great news as vitamin D is essential for balancing blood calcium levels and optimizing our immune, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems.

QMS Deep Gentle Cleanser, £38 at Liberty9 of 14

QMS, Deep Gentle Cleanser, £38 at Liberty

Suitable for all skin types, this has quickly become one of the most important products in my skincare routine. In fact, I start to panic if I know I'm running out of it. It's extremely gentle but still manages to take off even the most stubborn of makeup and will leave your face feeling nourished.

Sunday Riley, C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil, £68 at Net-a-Porter10 of 14

Sunday Riley, C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil, £68 at Net-a-Porter

This is the recommendation of our beauty writer (and the owner of seriously good skin) Emma Stoddart, who says: 'When my skin is looking a bit dull I'll massage in a few drops pre-moisturiser and skin looks visibly perkier.' I'm buying this immediately.

Sarah Chapman, 3D Moisture Infusion Mask, £46 for 4 at Selfridges11 of 14

Sarah Chapman, 3D Moisture Infusion Mask, £46 for 4 at Selfridges

Joely Walker, Grazia's beauty dIrector, told me these masks are her very favourites and leave her skin feeling completely amazing. Of course, that's no surprise as Sarah Chapman is the skin guru for some of the world's most famous women, including Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham.

TAN-LUXE, The Face Self Tan Drops, £3512 of 14

TAN-LUXE, The Face Self Tan Drops, £35

Annie Vischer, our beauty editor and all-round skincare junkie, swears by these drops in colder months. 'They're packed with hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, so I can keep my complexion bright, and swerve winter dullness,' she says. Annie mixes a few drops with her moisturiser every three days or so, depending on how much of a boost she might need.

Balance Me, Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm, £2413 of 14

Balance Me, Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm, £20

One of my favourite people to go to for skincare advice is my friend Frankie, a fellow beauty editor and fountain of knowledge when it comes to brilliant products. She told me that, at the moment, she is utterly obsessed with this cleanser. 'It's a smooth, nourishing balm that gives a deep clean and gentle exfoliate while making sure skin is super soft and moisturised,' she says. 'I love ending a long day by massaging it in, then removing it with a warm flannel. It feels like a real treat.'

Charlotte Tilbury, Charlotteu2019s Magic Cream, £2514 of 14

Charlotte Tilbury, Charlotte’s Magic Cream, £25

If you have particularly dry skin, this will soon be your new favourite moisturiser. It's thick and indulgent, working overnight to restore skin and give maximum hydration. It's based on Charlotte's original backstage formula, that she used to give supermodels their glow. That's good enough for me.
