He's a big hitter in the fragrance arena too. Narciso Rodriguez launched his first fragrance For Her back in 2003 and since then the brand has added countless lauded scents to its ever-expanding collection. The achingly fashionable bottles (did someone order minimalist chic?) are an avid Instagrammer's dream and it goes without saying that each perfume blend is exquisite. The newest edition to the Narciso Rodriguez fragrance hall of fame? Narciso Rodriguez For Her Musc Noir, a bold new scent that channels modern femininity through a sensuous cocktail of leather suede accords, a heart of musk notes and heliotrope and hints of luscious plum and heady white cedar and rose scents. Here Narciso himself talks to Grazia about what it takes to create a modern perfume, the significance of musk and what fragrance means to him:
On the scent creation process
'Each fragrance is created differently and the inspiration varies greatly. What they have in common is that they are all born from great passion. They could be inspired by a muse, a colour, or a flower. It varies so much with each fragrance. Finding and deciphering all of this information and ultimately creating a new "feeling" is a process that I enjoy working on very much.'
On what makes Narciso Rodriguez For Her Musc Noir special
'This scent is uniquely intriguing. It has a heart of musk that is warm and seductive. It also has deep, rich, dark plum accords that add a mysterious quality to it as well. It is timeless, ageless, and effortlessly beautiful.'
On what musk brings to a scent
'Musk is the most sensual and interesting ingredient to work with when it comes to creating a fragrance. It smells differently on each wearer and therefore makes the scent unique to each person who wears it. It is beautiful on its own, but also extremely beautiful when layered with other ingredients.'
On the best way to wear perfume
'I love to layer scents that I love straight after I shower. It can set my mood up for the rest of the day.'
On the impact of fragrance on confidence
'The right fragrance says so much about you, how you feel about yourself, who you are, how you would like to be recognised and ultimately how you will be remembered, especially when you leave the room. It is one of the most important parts of your “look” even if it is invisible.'
On what different scents mean to him
'Gardenia brings back memories of happiness, notes of musk bring back memories of love and notes of orange blossom bring back memories of euphoria.'
