Over the past few months, I’ve tested more SPFs than I’d care to admit. With my skin being incredibly sensitive- particularly when it comes to blemishes and redness- I tend to react to unsuitable products within a day or two. The smattering of spots around my jawline and flush of red creeping across my t-zone tells me everything I need to know. And so I move swiftly on to the next. For this reason, I’ve become something of an SPF snob. I know what works for my skin, and I’m equally confident in what doesn’t. As a rule, I gravitate towards lighter, calming formulas that absorb quickly - these are less likely to aggravate my skin.
In recent weeks, both the Simple Glow+ SPF 50 Invisible Fluid, £8 and the La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVAir SPF50, £25 have earned top marks from me - these are two, solid options. Richer, more indulgent creams, on the other hand, rarely sit well. My skin doesn’t seem to take kindly to anything too heavy or cocooning, so I usually steer clear. But cue a swift U-turn from me. After surprisingly getting along with the slightly thicker texture of Augustinus Bader Sunscreen SPF50, £105 I decided to give the Laneige Hydro UV Defense EX Sunscreen SPF 50 a proper go. Priced at £26, here’s why I think it’s a beauty buy that genuinely deserves your attention.
What does the Laneige Hydro UV Defense EX sunscreen SPF 50 do?
The Laneige Hydro UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50 is a chemical sunscreen that offers high-level protection against UV rays. In addition to helping prevent the visible signs of sun-induced ageing, it’s bolstered by an impressive blend of skin-loving ingredients. Take centella asiatica for one - it's well known for its calming, anti-redness abilities. There's also hydro-ionised mineral water in there designed to deliver a burst of hydration to thirsty, parched skin. The result? A formula that not only shields but also soothes, making it an ideal choice for sensitive or easily irritated complexions. Plus, it promises no white case.

How to apply Laneige Hydro UV Defense EX sunscreen SPF 50
After speaking to a dermatologist last year I realised I was applying too little SPF. Much too little. Nowadays, after shaking the tube, I'll squeeze out two finger lengths worth - this is the recommended to dose to ensure adequate protection. I'll apply all across my face, taking extra care to blend it into the hairline where I have extra pigmentation. I'll then take a third fingers worth and apply across my neck and décolletage. Honestly, since being diligent and liberal with my SPF application it's made the world of difference to my skin. Be consistent and reap the rewards.
Our verdict
Rachael Martin beauty director says:
'I’ve been testing this one for around three weeks now, and so far, I’m genuinely impressed. My initial thoughts centred on the texture- it’s definitely thicker than the feather-light formulas I typically favour, and, to be honest, it doesn’t absorb quite as quickly either. I find I need to take my time with application, working it into the skin using smooth, circular motions to ensure it blends evenly. But once it’s on, that’s when the real magic happens. Despite the slightly richer consistency, it feels completely undetectable on the skin. It's weightless, non-greasy, and provides a subtle, healthy-looking glow that lasts all day.

It’s formulated with hydrating hydro-ionised mineral water and centella asiatica, a soothing ingredient known for its anti-redness and anti-inflammatory properties. Together, they’ve noticeably calmed my complexion, significantly reducing redness around my nose, cheeks and jawline- essentially, the usual culprits for flare-ups. The best part? I noticed an improvement within three weeks, which, in the world of skincare, is impressively quick.

In terms of longevity, It wears beautifully on its own but also layers well under makeup, acting almost like a hydrating primer. And, crucially, it doesn’t pill or feel heavy - yep, even in the recent heatwave we've been having.'
Final thoughts
Sensitive, redness prone skin? This could be just the ticket to bolster and beautify an uneven complexion. All in all, it’s quickly become a non-negotiable in my summer routine. Here's to another excellent facial SPF to add to my stash.
