If you follow any beauty addicts on Instagram it's highly likely you might have noticed a new tool popping up in flat lay after flat lay. Looking like a paint-roller and a photogenic turquoise colour, the object in question is a jade roller.
An age-old idea that Chinese women have been incorporating into their skincare routines as far back as the 7th century, the jade roller is having a renaissance as we discover the value of ancient beauty techniques and importance of facial massage.
Wondering if should invest? And what on earth you do with it? We found out…
What are the benefits of using a jade roller?
Firstly, as a form of facial massage a jade roller will increase lymphatic drainage and eliminate build up of toxins. This helps to reduce both redness and puffiness. ‘The cool and smooth surface of the jade roller allows you to access into muscles and tissues with just the right amount of pressure,’ facialist Abigail James explained.
Massaging your face in this way will also release tension and smooth out knots in the facial muscles caused by stress. Not only will this bring a little zen into your day but it could also reduce headaches and combat sinus problems. Plus, if you believe in the power of crystals you will be aware that jade also has its own healing powers - as a stone it is believed to promote balance and peace.

How should I use a jade roller?
‘Roll back and forth with more pressure placed on the upward motion and working around the facial contours. You can’t over do it so take your time and don’t forget to also work on your neck,’ James told us.
For a great de-puffing fix, use in the morning pre-makeup. Or, before bed take time to make it a relaxing, sleep-inducing ritual. In the summer (or on a hangover) pop the jade roller in the fridge for a cooling and soothing massage.
What products should you use with a jade roller?
Using a jade roller to massage product into your skin will help the product penetrate more deeply. This works particularly well at night along with a nourishing face oil. Simply warm a few drop of face oil in your hands and press into your face before massaging in using the jade roller.
