According to Dr Tijion Esho - who is widely referred to as 'the lip doctor' - full, over-lined lips are going to be one of the biggest beauty trends of the summer, and it's all down to Hailey Bieber. The 25-year-old model regularly reels in millions of likes at a time with posts that showcase her make-up looks, and her loyal followers are taking note.
While Hailey revealed her go-to liner hack on Instagram last month - read up on it here - Dr Esho is adamant that everyone can achieve plump lips at home without over-lining or looking into fillers - a treatment that's now one of the most popular on the menu UK-wide. Read on for his top tips:
1. Stick To A Routine
'Remember that if you want to keep your lips smooth and hydrated, it takes routine,' says Dr Esho, 'I recommend that people use lip products every single day, multiple times a day if you can. The more regularly you use them, the better the results will be.'
2. Exfoliate
'If your lips are dry and flaky they reflect less light,' says Dr Esho, 'which makes them look smaller.' The answer? 'Use a toothbrush along with a balm to gentle brush away the surface dead skin on your lips.' 'And if you want to go the extra mile,' he says, 'lip masks are a great way to make the most of a moment of self-care and really nourish your lips. Look for ones that contain emollients - these smooth lips by filling in any cracks - and occlusives, waxes or oils that seal the benefits in.'
3. Stick To Products Made Specifically For Your Lips
'Many people think that they can use general peptide-based skincare for their lips, but they do different things,' explains Dr Esho, 'peptides work to boost your collagen levels over time. A good lip serum combines pure, undiluted peptides and bio-actives to encourage visible lip volume.'
4. Use A Lip Serum Daily
'My number one tip would be to work a lip serum into your daily routine,' says Dr Esho, 'as we age our lips change. Our lips lose volume, suffer from pigmentation and lose hydration. As well as drinking plenty of water each day, remember to massage on a hydrating lip serum.'
5. Avoid TikTok Hacks
'There has been a real rise in TikTok videos that showcase "lip tricks" and these aren't recommended by experts,' warns Dr Esho, 'things like using chilli flakes or cinnamon on lips to make them swell. Ingredients like these are irritants, which cause blood to rush towards your lips. Long-term irritation of your lips can lead to damage of the skin barrier, so it's not something I advise. Remember that your lops are sensitive, so any product you put on them should be safe. They're the only lips you'll ever get so care for them!'
6. Use An SPF
'If you're applying sunscreen, get close to your lip line and use a balm or lipstick with at least an SPF 30 in it. Don't forget to treat your lips the same way you'd treat other areas of skin on your face. The skin around your mouth should be protected every morning with sunscreen and topical antioxidants to prevent damage from daily UV light.'
