There’s something about a summer holiday that drizzles some main character energy into our very psyche. But while we might be feeling the best, carefree versions of ourselves, the opposite can often be said of our complexions. ‘Our skin usually takes an immediate hit as soon as we board the plane, with the dry, pressurised, recycled cabin air causing it to become dehydrated and tight with an increased risk of breakouts and irritation,’ says Dr Anjali Mahto, consultant dermatologist at Self London. ‘Once we actually reach our destination, our skin may be affected thanks to increased sun exposure, salt water, chlorinated pools and a change in diet and drink consumption.’ Mahto’s advice? Adapting your routine by adding in some choice actives will help give your skin what it needs to remain as blissed out as you feel.
IN SYNC
Synchronise your skincare with your shut- eye by opting for ingredients such as Olea Vitae (found in sleep products such as M&S Formula Sleep & Replenish Light Sleep Cream, £22.50) to feign some R&R. 'Jet Lag can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm, which in turn can affect skin functions,’ says Mahto. ‘Skin repair and regeneration processes slow down, which can lead to increased sensitivity and the potential for breakouts or irritation in some people. Olea Vitae is derived from olive leaves and, although more research is needed, it’s thought to help support the skin’s natural circadian rhythm by promoting cellular energy production and enhancing the skin’s repair processes.’
SOUP UP YOUR SPF
By now, we all know that SPF is the non- negotiable part of our everyday skincare arsenal and numero uno on the packing list, but did you know that by combining it with vitamin C you’re amplifying its effectiveness? ‘Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection against UV-induced free radical damage, therefore reducing the risk of sunburn and premature ageing,’ says Mahto. ‘When paired with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, it enhances UV protection by neutralising free radicals that sunscreen alone may not block. By combining the two you are creating a more comprehensive defence against sun damage.’
THIRSTY WORK
Most of us never spend as much time immersed in water as when on holiday,
yet it’s often the time our skin is crying out for moisture. ‘Skin faces extra dehydration due to increased sun exposure, salt water, chlorinated pools and air travel,’ confirms Mahto, who recommends opting for ingredients that will help hydrate and retain moisture, especially hyaluronic acid. She suggests also looking out for humectants, such as glycerine, to draw moisture into the skin, as well as ceramides, which are crucial for maintaining the skin’s natural barrier to prevent moisture loss and protect against environmental damage.'
RESCUE REMEDY
Bring holidayed-out skin back from the brink with a raft of soothing ingredients, such as aloe vera, and free-radical scavenging antioxidants such as vitamin E to reduce inflammation and aid recovery.
‘Lifestyle factors will also help your skincare do its job better,’ advises Mahto. ‘Try to maintain a healthy diet with foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to support skin health from the inside out and aim for seven to nine hours’ sleep a night, as adequate rest helps your skin to repair and regenerate.'
