The way we shop for beauty has changed profoundly this year and that becomes very obvious when scrolling through John Lewis' best-selling beauty products of 2020. Lockdown had us reassessing our beauty routines entirely. Many of us ditched full faces of make-up and got reacquainted with our bare complexions - cue a heavy emphasis on skincare. Suddenly the nation was obsessed with sorting through the depths of their bathroom cabinets, eschewing cleansers, moisturisers and serums that we'd used unquestioningly for years and making way for new gen skincare solutions. Skincare became an investment. Sales of multi-functional serums at John Lewis soared by +168%, cleansers by +142% and soothing moisturisers by +165%. We set aside our bold lipsticks, stains and matte lacquers in favour of balms. Sales of lipglosses and balms at John Lewis rocketed up to +122% an the Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment SPF15, £19.50, was the best selling lip product overall.

Then we had the hair issue. Being barred from our beloved hairdressers for a prolonged amount of time meant those with coloured hair had to reach for at-home solutions. We were obsessed with at-home treatments and consequently Olaplex' No.3 Hair Perfector 100ml, £26, hit the top spot in the best selling hair product stakes.

A combined obsession with skincare and the closure of salons meant that those who got used to booking in for a little skincare based TLC were willing to spend more on at-home solutions. It's no surprise, therefore, that the MZ Skin Light-Therapy Golden Facial Treatment Device, £385, ranks as the best selling beauty device at John Lewis this year.
